A delicious cake with a long history.
The French gracefully named it a "gâteau de voyage", the Brits a "teacake" or possibly a "weekend cake", and the Italians a "torta da viaggio". Travel cakes have found their place in bakeries and kitchens all over the world. Originally created for the Marquise de Sévigné's by her chefs in 17th century France, for her travels between the Palace of Versailles and Brittany. The cake required portability, shareabilty, and be able to withstand a weeklong journey and remain "delightfully edible".
Nowadays, they are the perfect accompaniment for any journey, including a trip to your kitchen table. These cakes use staple pantry ingredients and have a prolonged shelf life at room temperature, perfect for on the go. They have a delicious texture. They are essential for a weekend getaway, picnics, car trips, train rides, hikes, skiing,.......or any journey. At Parchment we love coming up with and tasting variations of travel cake, and love sharing our discoveries with you. A Gateau de Voyage is also perfect as a thoughtful gift.
